I am the pastor serving with my wife Peggy. We arrived at Promised Land church in September of 2013. Previous to that we served seven years at Bethel church in Kutztown, PA, and a church plant in Wilkes-Barre, PA. We are “empty nesters” with three grown children: Keith, Bryan, and Cherise. All of them are married and we have been blessed with six grandchildren. I was born in Duluth, MN, grew up in Ceylon, MN then moved to Loveland, CO where I graduated from high school. In 1977 I entered the Navy and served in the Submarine Service until I retired in 1994. I accepted Jesus Christ under the ministry of the “Navigators” while attending a Navy school in Dam Neck, VA. In my exposure to the “Church,” I was wonderfully challenged through a life-changing ministry at the Preston Nazarene church while stationed at the Submarine Base in Groton, CT. Following my retirement from the Navy I lived in Londonderry, NH, and worked in Hudson, MA for Digital Equipment Corp., and Intel as an Operations shift manager.

In 1999 I entered Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, CO where I met and married my lovely wife. I have a passion to introduce people to the Lord and watch their lives transformed by Jesus and His Word. Relationships and community are at the center of that process. I believe that Jesus’ message is so relevant to our culture, and this Christ-centered message [and walk] will transform people’s lives and our community where so many are searching for real answers and truth in their spiritual quest. My messages are biblically-centered and down-to-earth, relevant to where we’re all at, and I do sometimes utilize contemporary media to drive the point home. The Promised Land family is a welcoming, fun-loving community of believers. Our worship could best be described as “blended,” a combination of traditional and contemporary in nature. I hope you have an opportunity to join us on the journey as we develop an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ and encourage one another

John, a preacher’s kid, is a 1977 graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College (BA. in Social Work). After working several years, first as a crisis intervention caseworker and then as a child protective caseworker in  Rochester, NY  he followed God’s call into the mission field and worked full-time with Youth for Christ for over forty years. He served as the Executive Director for Twin Tiers YFC (Elmira, NY), North Country YFC (Cambridge, NY), and Lehigh Valley YFC (Allentown./Bethlehem, PA), retiring from YFC/USA in December of 2020.  Additionally, John served as the senior pastor of the Cambridge First Baptist Church from 1996-2004. He joined the staff of PLCN on a part-time basis in September 2021 as pastor of Families and Youth.

John is an avid follower of the American Revolutionary and Civil Wars and visits those hallowed battlegrounds (mostly Gettysburg) with his family frequently. His other interests include cooking, gardening, and reading, and is a longsuffering fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. His favorite authors are C.S. Lewis, Jeff Shaara, Moses, and Dr. Luke. John’s sports hero growing up was Roberto Clemente. His favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6

John is married (1986) to Joanie who presently works with the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 as a secretary and administrative assistant. Joanie, until recently, also served as Lehigh Valley YFC’s administrative assistant and bookkeeper. John and Joanie are the truly blessed parents to Hannah Joy (24) and Benjamin (22), both of who minister to teens in YFC.

Music has always been essential to me growing up and is my favorite way to communicate with the Lord. I have been blessed to serve at Promised Land in this capacity for just over seven years. I am thankful for a team of musicians and singers that have been faithful in helping to make the entire worship service complete.

1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.

2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come into His presence with singing.

3 Know that the Lord is God.

It is He that made us, and we are His;

we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise.

Give thanks to Him, bless His name.

5 For the Lord is good;

His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 100 / NRSV
